Glossary of Terms

 
 

Broadcast Media

Includes any and all forms of broadcast media (Radio, Free TV [Network, Syndicated or Local], Cable TV [Basic Cable/Pay Subscription], commercial Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), Closed-Circuit Satellite, or Pay-Per-View etc.) known and unknown. Licensing for broadcast does not include performance rights. All programs nust be broadcast by affiliates with active performance society licenses, such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.


Non-Broadcast Media

Non-Broadcast media includes but is not limited to the following: live events or trade shows, In-store broadcasts, instructional DVD/Video, corporate DVD/Video, theme park, cruise ship, on-hold music.


Laserdrop

One continuous use of a single production music cue. The duration of use cannot exceed the length of the original cue on the source disc. Any additional edits or loops exceeding the original cue's duration are considered an additional full music use. A laserdrop license does not include re-dubbing for foreign language versions.


Production Blanket

Generally, this is a set rate applied for multiple laserdrops used within a single production. Blanket production music fees are usually determined by factors such as the length of the production, the type of media and the territories covered.


Programs

Refers to productions that are Broadcast Programs or Infomercials. Broadcast Programs are productions transmitted by Radio, Free TV (Network, Syndicated or Local), Cable TV (Basic Cable/Pay Subscription), commercial Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), Closed-Circuit Satellite, or Pay-Per-View. Segments must be separately cleared when re-synchronized in a new program or for DVD use. In-Transit Programs are those that are exhibited on planes, ships and trains.


Commercials / PSA /Promo

Refers to productions that endorse or otherwise promote a person, place or thing. Mulitple versions of the same commercial / psa / promo (tags and/or cut-downs) require additional clearance. For Infomercials, please refer to Program


Tags

A tag is a short segment inserted into or added to the main body of a commercial or promotional piece that presents additional or qualifying information regarding the product, though it does not change the original length of the commercial. In general, each tag requires a separate license fee.


Territory

Licenses are issued for specific territories. See below:

•  Local

Often refers to one state (or an even smaller area).

•  Regional

One major market OR 2-5 states. Major market may be individual cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Denver, and Seattle.

•  National/Domestic

6 or more states OR more than one major market.

•  World / Universe



Productions for Sale

Refers to Video/Audio DVD/CD produced (in a linear fashion only) that will be sold to either the general public or to a select audience. Also refers to distribution of any of the above as a result of a bonus program or product premium


Productions Not For Sale

Includes CDs / DVDs / Video given away as promotional pieces; or used as in-house educational tools, etc.


Theatrical Release

Productions - generally films - that will be distributed in venues for which admission is charged, or for which some sort of consideration is given in exchange for access to the production. Theatrical Rights package clearances include "in context" trailers and screenings on military bases.


Trailers

Commercials promoting a theatrical production. Generally the licensing fee will not include re-dubbing for foreign language versions.


Production Music

Production music is music that is specifically composed for placement within both broacast and non-broadcast media projects.
